Strut Bridal Salon corners the market for plus-size brides with Bixby Knolls shop
BY PAT MAIO / THE REGISTER Strut Bridal Salon has opened a new store in Bixby Knolls, its first store outside of Phoenix and second location because of growing interest in plus-sized bridal dresses in Los Angeles and Orange counties, the owner says. Strut Bridal had received lots of customers from this region looking for wedding dresses of plus-size make, so it made sense to owner Ann Campeau to expand here. Ann Campeau is photographed at Strut Bridal Salon in Bixby Knolls on Friday. Campeau, co-owner of the new bridal dress shop, is among an elite group of store owners who cater solely to plus-sized brides. She has a store in Phoenix, but is expanding to Long Beach as a way to capture business in Southern California. CARLOS DELGADO, FOR THE REGISTER Five tips on starting a business Ann Campeau, owner of Strut Bridal Salon, offered five tips on starting up a successful business. She began her plus-size wedding business in Scottsdale, Ariz., but wanted to open up a second store in Bixby Knolls, to cater to brides-to-be from Southern California. Campeau, 36, is generating revenue between $500,000 and $1 million annually at Strut Bridal Salon. Establishing a business. Understand that it takes longer to establish a business and clientele than you think. Customers dont just walk in. You need a financial cushion of enough to pay bills for six months without any revenues. Inventory. Dont overspend on your inventory. You can always buy more stuff, but if you overbuy, its tougher to sell it off. Support, Make sure you have a great support system, with family and friends behind you. Online. Establish an online presence early. A website has to be good. Understand what search engine optimization means, Campeau said. Search engine optimization is a technical way that your website can easily be found online. Patience. Were picking up our signage today, going down to the wire. Have infinite patience because youre bound to run into so many hiccups. Put one foot in front of the other. In starting up a business, you have to worry about zoning, signage, inspections and permits. California is just a little more difficult to start up a business. Youd think they want my tax revenue. Strut Bridal Salon What: Strut Bridal Salon caters to plus-size women, from size 12 to 32, and carries dresses, headpieces, veils, accessories and bridesmaid and special occasion gowns. Prices range from $499 to $2,499. This is the companys second location. Where: 4264 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach Hours: Appointments required. Monday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Tuesday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Information: 562-612-1884 or strutbridalsalon.com We got so many brides from Southern California who would fly in, Campeau said. That was shocking to us. Campeau said she began her business in 2010 after having a bad experience trying to find a wedding dress that would fit. I went to half a dozen places, and it was humiliating, she said. I was told to hold up the dress in the mirror and see if I liked it or not, then I could order it online. Another compounding factor was that, though Campeau typically wore a size 14-16 size dress, wedding dresses run much larger and her dress needed to be taken in by a seamstress. It's a total crapshoot on what size you order, she said. She ended up measuring her body, looking at a size chart online and pulling the trigger on buying a dress with a zipper in the back that she had to replace with a corset to make it fit. She dropped $700 for the dress and $200 more for the corset. In 2009, she found a boutique store in the tony Scottsdale area outside of Phoenix, and the idea took off. She relied on financial backing from her brother, Bob Campeau, a corporate turnaround specialist in San Francisco's East Bay area, to help set up the first store. She selected the name Strut Bridal Salon because she wanted brides-to-be to feel like they could strut their stuff. Hawthorne resident Syreeta Scott stumbled on Strut Bridal earlier this month while scouting out plus-size wedding dresses online. The 31-year old is getting married Feb. 1 and was frustrated by her visits to retail chain David's Bridal in Burbank and Torrance, where plus-size dresses were limited in selection and she felt pressured by salesmen to make a purchase. I didn't feel comfortable ordering online, Scott said. She searched for the key words plus-sized bridal shops and Los Angeles and came up with Strut. Jennifer Johassen-Goldstein, who had problems finding a dress for her wedding, steams weddings dresses for Strut. Her biggest complaint about finding a plus-size wedding dress was the frumpiness of the dress. They tend to be less grand; in fact, less everything, said Goldstein, who ended up buying a size 26 and getting it reworked by a seamstress. I wanted to look like a bride on my wedding day. I didn't want to look boring. Contact the writer: firstname.lastname@example.org , 562-243-5497
